How to Find Peace: The Peace of God Be With You

The Peace of God Surpasses All Understanding

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:7

Life can often feel overwhelming, filled with stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. In these moments, finding peace can seem like an impossible task. However, there is a source of peace that surpasses all understanding – the peace of God.

What is the Peace of God?

The peace of God is a deep sense of calm and tranquility that comes from knowing and trusting in God. It is not a temporary feeling or a fleeting moment of relief, but a lasting state of inner peace that remains even in the midst of chaos. The peace of God in our lives is not a peace that is dependent on external circumstances or material possessions. It is a peace that comes from a deep connection with our Creator and a surrendering of our worries and fears to Him. It is truly a peace that surpasses all understanding because it goes beyond human comprehension and logic.

In the English language, the word “peace” is typically associated with a passive image that depicts an absence of civil disturbance or hostilities, or a personality that is free from internal and external conflicts. However, the biblical interpretation of peace is much broader and primarily relies on the Hebrew root “slm”, which means “to be complete” or “to be sound”. This verb carries both a dynamic and a static meaning, which is “to be complete or whole” or “to live well.” The noun has many nuanced meanings, but can generally be grouped into four categories.

  1.  As wholeness of life or body (i.e. health).
  2. A right relationship or harmony between two parties or people, often established by a covenant.
  3. As prosperity, success, or fulfillment.
  4. As victory over one’s enemies or absence of war.

The Divine Names and Titles of God: One of Gods titles in the Bible is Yᵊhōvâ (yeh-ho-vaw’), translated into English, Jehovah. Jehovah meaning the Eternal, the Immutable One, He Who WAS, and IS, and IS TO COME. In the Bible, the name Jehovah is combined with ten other words, which form what are known as “the Jehovah Titles.” One of the titles is Jehovah Shalom. Shalom is simply the Hebrew word meaning peace God is our eternal source of peace. He is our Jehovah-shalom!

How to Experience the Peace of God

Experiencing the peace of God starts with cultivating a relationship with Him.  Below are a few key steps you can take to invite His peace into your life:

1. Seek His Presence

Setting aside time each day to come into the presence of God, in my opinion, is one of, if not the most important thing any person can do. In the book of John, Jesus calls us friends, “Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.” God loves you and me and wants to have a relationship with us. When we appoint time each day to spend with our Jehovah-shalom, He will indeed bless you with His peace.

2. Read His Word

The Word of God is powerful; “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” As we study Gods letter to us we get wisdom, and wisdom is power. He is the same God yesterday, today, and forever, and His promises still apply to us. One of those promises is peace; Jesus said “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be dismayed.” His Word is true and never changes. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever,” Jesus told us to take His yoke, learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart: and we WILL find rest for our souls.

3. Surrender Your Worries

One of the biggest barriers to experiencing God’s peace is holding onto our worries and trying to control everything ourselves. Instead, surrender your worries and fears to God. Give Him control and trust that He will work everything out for your good. 1 Peter 5:7 says that we are to cast all our worries on Him (Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.) When you surrender your worries, you free yourself from the burden of trying to figure everything out on your own. You can rest in the knowledge that God is working behind the scenes, orchestrating things in ways that you may not understand.

The Benefits of the Peace of God
